"Lindsey is a phenomenal problem solver. I have never seen an equine issue she couldn't fix quickly and with kindness. It's amazing. That's what sold me on Natural Horsemanship". Paige T

`Natural Horsemanship Summer Camp 2016

So much fun with horses you can’t wait to do it again!

"Just wanted to let you know that Lyndsay thoroughly enjoyed horse camp.  She learned a lot and was exhausted at the end of each day (which is a good thing!).  She definitely wants to do camp again next summer." Cindy V

This is the camp that every horse crazy youth wants - we give campers the MOST time with horses!

We are one of the only summer camp in Ontario to teach harmony horsemanship – we teach campers how to connect with their horse, how to understand their horse, and how to play with their horse on the ground so they can have a safer and better riding experience.

Head coach, Lindsey Partridge has been coaching since 2002. Our campers have a lot of fun and enjoy the variety they get to do with horses – a lot of our campers come for multiple weeks and return year after year because it’s such a fun and positive experience. Lindsey plans each week with the other coaches and provides assistance as needed.

Kids come from all over to take part in our summer camps – last year we had campers from as far as Kingston, North Bay, Guelph, and British Columbia! There are nearby Bed and Breakfast or campgrounds for families to stay if making a trip out of it.

Our safety standards are very high – riding instruction requires one coach for 6 students, and we often exceed safety standards and provide some private instruction, and have additional staff and volunteers in the ring for added supervision and safety around the horses. With beginners our support ratio is often 1 to 1 or 1 to 2.

Our campers learn everything about horses and get tons of hands on experience. Campers learn how to get their horse from the paddock safely, get the horse ready to ride, play with them on the ground, and ride. It’s a complete experience of being with horses.

We have a variety of camp weeks that cater to different age groups and experience levels. Take a look at our camp weeks to see what one is best for you!

We really tailor activities to the campers - beginners will get a lot of supervised play and riding with horses to boost their confidence and help them learn. Advanced riders will get time to practice more advanced skills.

Our goal is to give your camper a safe and fun experience with horses - going way beyond the normal horse camp program... we want to show your camper how to really connect with horses - how to play, how to understand them, how to be safe with horses, how to care for them, how to ride, and how to get a horse to want to work for you.

We offer the most time with horses and the most variety - English, jumping, western, trails, bareback, ground games, and more!

We are conveniently located in Pontypool right on Hwy 35! Pontypool is part of Kawartha Lakes and is central to Lindsay, Port Perry and Oshawa and very close to Blackstock, Nestleton Station, Orono, Cavan, and Bethany (within approx 10 min), and close to Newcastle, Bowmanville, Lindsay, Peterborough, Millbrook, Janetville, Yelverton, Oshawa, Kirby, Port Pery, Peterborough, and the surrounding areas (within approx 20-30min).

If you are using a map or GPS to find our address, please note we are on Hwy 35 between Telecom and Waite Rd at 531. We are south of hwy 7A and north of the junction of hwy 115 by about 5 minutes. Many GPS tell you to go way too far north – so be careful you have the right address!

All camp weeks are 35% off until January 15th, 2016 for early bird registration.

That means a 5 day camp week is regular $500+HST and now you can register for $325+HST!

  • We give campers the most time with horses - literally almost all day is with horses except snacks and lunch
  • We teach harmony horsemanship - campers won't be told to wear spurs or crop their horse. We believe in learning how to get horses to understand us and that we should learn to understand the horse. Campers learn how to be a safe and effective leader for their horses - without being a bully. We promote thinking about what is best for the horse, and how to keep horses happy.
  • We give campers the most variety with horses - campers can choose if they want to ride English, Western, or try both! Campers get to try a huge variety of activities with horses including ground games, riding, horse care, and more!
  • Campers get an Authentic Experience - campers learn all about horses and get to have an authentic experience of really connecting with a horse. We try our best to partner a camper to their own horse for the week (they get to try other horses too, but will ride/play with 'their' horse at least once a day), and campers get to learn to do everything for that horse - how to safely get the horse from the field, how to make a grain meal for their horse, how to tack their horse up, how to get their horse ready to ride, how to ride, how to play, and how to get their horse to want to be with them.
  • Competitive Free Environment - we promote working together as a team and being supportive of each other. We won't be putting campers against each other in competitive situations... it's all about fun learning to us! Even during our Show Camp week, we’ll be teaching about showing, and practicing patterns for the shows but we’ll keep it fun, positive, and supportive. There are competitive opportunities available at Partridge Horse Hill - look for our horse shows which are optional for all students, learn more under upcoming events and look for 'Horse Show'
  • You Can Bring Your Own Horse – If you want to bring your own horse to camp you can – with no added cost!
  • A Chance to do More - at Partridge Horse Hill we offer so many opportunities from camp to lessons, a helpers program, part boarding, horse shows, play days, and more. As a camper of Partridge Horse Hill you are a student - and depending on your age and level you can sign up for other opportunities too. Check out our other services to learn more
  • Experienced Staff - all of the staff at Partridge Horse Hill are CPR & First Aid Certified, as well as very experienced in natural horsemanship. All of the activities are carefully planned with head coach Lindsey Partidge, certified coach of Ontario, certified Gold NHA coach & trainer, and Rider Level 8 with the OEF. Many of our coaches and staff are NHA certified. We also have many volunteers that help with camp to help make it a safe and fun experience.

To inquire about a 2016 position as a coach, counsellor, helper or volunter please email partridgehorsehill@gmail.com (volunteers/helpers please also complete this application)

Summer camp is such a fun and big event that we need many people to help make it a success. Our volunteers help make our camp great by giving help to the horses, campers, and instructors. Some typical things a volunteer would do is helping supervise campers, helping campers tack their horses up, walking with a camper while they learn to play with a horse or ride, helping instructors set up the ring, or helping prepare for camp activities. All volunteers need to be at least 13 years of age.

1)     Volunteers: These are typically people new to horses and/or natural horsemanship, or people who want to be helping at camp but the helper spots are all taken. By volunteering at camp you are helping with supervision and setting up for camp activities, but you aren’t able to catch horses or tack up horses independently. You help us with supervision and some camp activities, and in exchange you are learning about horses and natural horsemanship by helping at camp. By being a new volunteer you will start to learn the skills to become an Experienced Volunteer. Volunteers don’t earn free camp or helper hours because they are already gaining so much learning just from volunteering at camp and are getting to be with friends for the summer. Volunteers can earn hours for community service for school if applicable.

2)     Helpers:

These helpers are able to safely catch a horse from the field and tack up a horse by themselves. These helpers are able to help maintain horse safety during camp activities because they know what are safe distances from other horses, how to lead and move horses, how to act around horses, and how to tell if a horse is upset or mad.

Helpers can earn community service hours OR free camp OR helper hours to be used for other PHH services at a rate of 5hr per day.

  • 1 free camp week=10 days helping at camp

3)     Assistant Instructors: Assistant Instructors are people wanting to become instructors, but need some experience and practice coaching. Assistant Instructors stay buddied with an instructor during their time at camp, and will get to practice coaching campers through some exercises and work side by side with instructors. This is a great experience to add to a resume and try if you’re thinking about becoming an instructor in the future. Assistants will help with activities related to lessons, and will get a chance to pick the coach’s brain about why certain lesson plans or exercises are used over others, how to set up a ring safely, etc. They will also get to learn about planning horse assignments and how to make decisions safely related to coaching.

Assistant Instructors do not earn free camp or other services because Partridge Horse Hill is already providing them with so much experience, knowledge, and learning. However, assistant instructors may get to join camp trail rides as they assist with learning how to take a trail ride out safely.

All volunteers need to be safe around the horses and campers, set a good example for campers, and follow instructions from the instructors.

If you would like to volunteer or be a helper for camp, please complete the volunteer form (click here) to apply. Please note that preference is given to helpers from previous years, or students at PHH.

Campers bring their own meals and snacks which they have both on our home's back deck/covered deck area and indoor arena. Campers are able to wash hands at the hand washing station.

A lot.

This really depends on the camper. Campers that are more experienced generally get more riding time because they are able to get their horses ready faster and they are easier to manage as a whole group for riding. Beginners are often given more private instruction where they are one on one with an instructor and horse, but then they also spend more time sharing a horse with a group and taking turns through different activities because it is safer than giving each beginner their own horse depending on what we are doing in the lesson or game.

Many campers that have gone to other riding camps and then come to ours have commented how much more time they have gotten to spend with horses and riding than other camps.

We also do natural horsemanship ground games, so although campers are not riding for all of their lesson they are learning how to play with horses and be safe with horses on the ground as well as riding.

During a day there are typically 4 activities, and usually at least 3 of those activities involve some type of riding, and 1 activity might be all ground games or a horse care/education activity that still involves being with horses.

We have an indoor arena that is new for 2016 so we can continue as planned!

Boots with a heel, long pants, a change of clothes, gloves are recommended, a helmet (we have a selection you can borrow but we don’t guarantee we’ll have one to fit you), a refillable water bottle, rain coat, sun screen, and your lunch & snacks.

It is always a good idea to bring your own helmet because then you know it fits. It does need to be an ASTM equestrian safety certified helmet (sold at tack/equestrian stores). We do have a selection of helmets that campers can borrow from.

  • Cancelation Policy: We understand that cancelations happen for a variety of reasons. We are a small camp that only takes 12 campers per week, so if you cancel it has a large impact on this small camp.

These are Cancellation options:

  1. At any time you can transfer your camp week to another camper. To do this please see the policy below ‘Transferring Your Camp Week Policy – giving your week to another camper’.
  2. At any time you can transfer your camp week to another week.  To do this please see the policy below “Transferring your Camp Week Policy (a camper wishing to switch to a different camp week)”
  3. When cancelling, your deposit is non-refundable regardless of when you register or cancel.
  4. There is a $30 admin fee for any change.
  5. You can cancel at any time prior to April 1, 2016 and you will be given a full refund less the deposit and the $30 admin fee.

  8. Cancelations made June 16, 2016 or later will not be refunded.

If you need to cancel camp because of a medical reason, you can provide us with a medical note and then we can either 1)  transfer your camp credit to another service at PHH to be used before the end of the calendar year (as lessons, in another camp week, a clinic, etc.) for an admin fee of $30, or else 2) you can be refunded all that you paid less the deposit and admin fee of $30. Medical reasons are any reason that a doctor determines it would not be safe for a person to attend camp (for example: the camper has chickenpox, a broken arm, etc.). Transferring to a later camp week is subject to availability and not guaranteed.
  • Transferring Your Camp Week Policy (giving your camp week to another camper): At any time you can transfer your camp week to another camper provided the new camper meets the requirements of the camp week (is the appropriate age, etc), and the new camper’s registration is completed by the Friday before the start of the camp week. To do this you need to have the camper taking your spot fill in the registration form, waiver, and permission form and submit the forms to Partridge Horse Hill with a note stating they are taking your spot in camp. Once the forms are received, Partridge Horse Hill will contact you to confirm you want to transfer your week. The new camper will need to complete registration by paying for their week and completeing all forms. After the new camper’s registration is complete and payment received, you will be refunded the full amount less a $30 administration fee (+HST). Please note that to transfer a camp week, you need to find the replacement camper and inform us who will be taking your camp week (i.e. the person taking your camp week cannot already be registered for camp, and we do not find a replacement camper for you).
  • Transferring Your Camp Week Policy (a camper wanting to switch to a different camp week): At any time you can transfer your camp week to another camp week, provided the camper meets the requirements of the camp week (is the appropriate age, etc), there is availability, and the registration is completed by the Friday before the start of the camp week. To do this you need to complete a new registration form and ensure the waiver and permission form are complete along with a note saying you are wanting to sign up for a different camp week. Once the forms are received, Partridge Horse Hill will contact you to confirm you want to transfer. If the week you want to transfer to is the exact same price, then you can transfer to the new week by paying a $30 administration fee +HST. If the new week you want to do is less expensive then you can switch weeks at no cost, or you can follow the refund policy above to refund the one week and purchase the new week at whatever the current promotion is. If the week you want to do is more expensive, then you need to pay the current price for the upgrade you want to register for.
  • All Campers need to be Mentally, Emotionally, and Physically Able to be safely around horses in a Group Environment: Horses are big, strong, and potentially dangerous, so it is important that everyone participating in our horse camp can follow instructions, remember safety rules, and physically be able to move around with good balance to keep themselves and others safe. For that reason it is extremely important that all campers be mentally, emotionally, and physically able to be with horses in a group setting. Our camps have some private instruction, but largely campers will be in groups with other campers. If your child has a physical, mental, or emotional challenge that requires one on one supervision then we cannot accommodate your child in camp. If your child comes to camp and Partridge Horse Hill deems our horse camp to be an unsafe environment for your child for any reason, your child will not be able to participate in horse camp, and there will be no refund given. In certain circumstances it may be possible for the parent/guardian to make arrangements for their child to stay in horse camp (for example if a child has a mild learning disability but requires constant supervision as deemed by Partridge Horse Hill, then the child may be permitted to stay in horse camp if the parent/guardian provides a supervisor (or comes themselves) to provide one on one supervision for their child). If you are unsure if your child is a good fit for our program please contact us. We have had many children have safe and fun experiences that have ADD, ADHD, FAS, and other conditions, but it is important to speak with us before completing registration so we can determine if our camp is a good fit for your child. It is important to us that we provide a safe environment for everyone at camp.
  • Proper Attire Policy: We are an OEF accredited facility and as such we adhere to safety standards. All campers need to wear an ASTM approved horseback riding helmet when riding, no exceptions. When riding with a saddle, boots with a heel are required, no exceptions.
  • Before & After Camp Care: Day Camp drop off is 8:30am, and Day Camp pick up is 4:30pm-4:45pm. If these drop off and pick up times do not work for you, please contact us to see if before and after care can be arranged to suit your needs. An additional fee will apply to cover staff time. Campers will not be signed in for camp until 8:30am unless previously arranged. Campers who are consistently picked up late will be billed for additional staff time to supervise at a rate of $12/hr.
  • Sign In & Sign Out: Every time you drop off a camper and pick up a camper we require a person 18 years or older to sign the camper in or out, as well as provide an emergency contact number. Parents/Guardians can provide name(s) of people that are allowed to sign out their camper.
